Pedestrians are abundant in Hawaii, especially around cities. The weather in Hawaii is warm year-round, so many residents choose walking as their main form of transportation. Running has also become a popular form of exercise. Runners and joggers are commonly seen grinding out their miles along the shoulders of crowded roadways. Unfortunately, being in such close proximity to vehicular traffic often leads to pedestrian accidents.
Recently, two fatal pedestrian accidents occurred within a span of 48 hours, adding to the list of traffic fatalities in what has so far been a deadly year for Hawaiians. The first accident happened in Maui along Veteran’s Highway during the morning hours. Authorities said a pickup truck struck a woman who was walking along the side of the road. Reportedly, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The second accident happened at night along Wailea Alanui Drive in Wailea. According to reports, a man was walking alongside the road when he was suddenly struck by a car. Tragically, the man died at the scene of the accident, authorities said. Reportedly, there have been seven traffic related fatalities already this year on Maui.
Both drivers and pedestrians need to stay focused and alert at all times around crowded roadways. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents often turn out to be fatal. Those in Hawaii who have suffered injuries or the loss of loved ones in pedestrian accidents could benefit by seeking the services of an experienced Honolulu injury lawyer. A successfully litigated claim could result in much-needed compensation to help victims and families recover any monetary losses.
