KAILUA-KONA, HI – A motorist managed to escape safely after driving her car into the water in Kailua-Kona on Monday night, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
Hawaii County police were called to the scene at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor after being notified of the incident at about 8 p.m.
Police said a woman was driving a 2020 Ford Edge SUV when she went down a boat ramp and into the water. The driver, a tourist, said she had been following directions from her GPS that led her to take that route and she mistakenly ended up going down the ramp.
The car was submerged in deep water but the woman was able to exit the vehicle and climb onto a nearby boat operated by a good Samaritan. No injuries were reported. The car was subsequently pulled from the water.
