HONOLULU, HI – A woman has died of injuries suffered in a collision between a large box truck and a passenger van in the Aiea area, police said.
The update was released by the Honolulu Police Department in connection with the Dec. 31, 2024, crash on the H-1 Freeway westbound, near the Aiea off-ramp. Authorities were notified earlier this month that the woman, age 73, had passed away.
Investigators learned that a 33-year-old man was driving a box truck containing multiple propane tanks at about 2:40 p.m. when the truck’s rollup door became ajar. When he stopped to try to secure the door, the vehicle was struck from behind by a westbound vehicle driven by the 73-year-old woman.
The woman was extricated from her car by the Honolulu Fire Department and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. The driver of the box truck was hospitalized in serious condition but later was upgraded to good condition. Two men who were passengers in the truck, ages 33 and 24, complained of pain but refused treatment at the scene.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Preliminary indications were that neither speed, drugs nor alcohol were contributing factors.
