PAPA’IKOU, HI -A woman was critically injured in a pedestrian collision in Pāpa‘ikou last week, according to a press release from Hawai‘i Island police.
Police were called to the area of Highway 19 and Mill Road on Feb. 7 after the incident happened at about 8 p.m. Officers learned that a man and woman were walking west in the marked crosswalk at the intersection when the woman was struck by a southbound 2018 Honda HR-V multi-purpose vehicle.
The woman, age 48, was listed in critical condition after being transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. The male pedestrian was not hit.
The Honda driver, a 55-year-old Hilo man, was not injured. The collision is being investigated by the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit. Police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the incident.
