WAIMALU, HI – A driver has been arrested in connection with a pedestrian collision that occurred in Waimalu on Thursday night, Hawaii News Now reports.
The incident happened near Pearlridge Center, where a 76-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle at about 9:20 p.m. Honolulu police said it happened as the woman was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk near the intersection of Moanalua Road and Ualo Street. She was hit by a vehicle going west on Moanalua Road.
The victim was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old woman, was not injured and stayed at the scene. Police said she showed signs of impairment and and she was subsequently arrested on charges of first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
Moanalua Road was closed between Kaonohi Street and Ualo Street for the investigation.
