Woman arrested in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian on Honoapiilani Highway

LAHAINA, HI – Maui police announced an arrest in the case of a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred Friday evening on Honoapiilani Highway, Hawaii News Now reported.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Victoria Grimaldi of Lahaina.  Investigators said she was trying to retrieve a chicken carcass from the roadway and was walking back to the southbound Makai shoulder at about 7:18 p.m. when she was hit by a car going northeast.  Grimaldi died after being taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The driver involved left the scene of the crash without stopping to help, police said.  The alleged driver, identified as 34-year-old Ashley Nienaber of Lahaina, was located about an hour later and was arrested for collision involving death or serious bodily injury.  She was released pending further investigation.
