HONOLULU, HI – A pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Downtown Honolulu last Friday, June 6.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of North Hotel Street and Maunakea Street.  Police said it began when an on-duty HPD officer observed a moped operator committing multiple traffic violations.

When the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, the moped rider failed to stop and turned from Smith Street onto North Hotel Street, continuing west.  The moped struck an 80-year-old woman who was trying to walk across North Hotel Street in a marked crosswalk.   The moped then was involved in another collision with a driver headed south on Maunakea Street.

The moped operator fled the scene after the collisions and has not yet been identified.   The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital and was listed in serious condition.

The driver in the second crash, a 47-year-old woman, and her passenger were not injured.  They remained at the scene.

Investigators have yet to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.
