MAKIKI, HI – A two-vehicle collision in the Makiki area early Saturday morning sent both drivers to the hospital, according to a release from the Honolulu Police Department.
The wreck occurred along the H-1 West Freeway, west of the Punahou Street overpass at about 3:45 a.m. The police department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section learned that a 25-year-old woman was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway.
Her vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by a 77-year-old man who was heading west in the #2 lane. Bystanders arrived at the scene to help extricate the woman from her car, and she was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The other driver was transported in good condition.
The woman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, police said.
Investigators do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
