The incident took place on Highway 11 near the 10-mile marker, prompting an emergency response at around 8:00 p.m.
Multiple witnesses told investigators that they had seen the victim, a 21-year-old woman from Puna, on the roadway some time before she was hit by a 2016 Honda CRV multi-purpose vehicle traveling northbound.
The young woman, who was found unresponsive by first responders at the scene, was rushed to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition. As of early Thursday afternoon, January 23, she was continuing to receive treatment.
The driver of the CRV, a 74-year-old man from Mountain View, was not reported hurt.
An investigation by the Hawai’i Island Police remains ongoing, but speed, alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played roles in the wreck.
