HILO, HI – A man who died in a pedestrian collision in Hilo last summer has now been identified, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Hawaii Island police said the victim of the Aug. 2 incident was 43-year-old Caesare Brown of Hilo. Brown was struck by a 2013 Toyota Corolla on Kuawa Street near the intersection with Manono Street at about 10 p.m.
Investigators said that Brown was reported to be in the roadway but was not in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by the sedan as it headed eastbound.
Brown was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then transferred to Queen’s Medical Center, where he died Sept. 12.
The driver, who was not injured, was charged initially with negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant before being released pending investigation. After Brown passed away, the investigation was reclassified from negligent injury to negligent homicide.
Police believe alcohol and inattention were contributing factors in the accident but are continuing to investigate.
