HAWAII ISLAND, HI – A driver escaped with minor injuries after crashing recently in the South Point area on the island of Hawai’i, ABC News reports.
The Feb. 25 accident took place near the Ka’u Forest Reserve at about 3:30 a.m. The Hawaii Fire Department said a 27-year-old tourist from Canada was driving a rented Jeep when he apparently took a wrong turn onto a narrow dirt road and drove off a 60-foot cliff near the South Point cliff dive.
The driver opened the passenger side door, went into the water and was swept out to sea before being directed back to shore. Several fishermen who witnessed the incident called 911 and a Coast Guard helicopter crew was able to rescue the man from the water using ropes.
He was hospitalized with minor cuts and mild hypothermia.
