Police officers and first responders were dispatched to the wreck on Kūhiō Highway near Hoʻokui Road in Kīlauea at about 7:45 a.m. A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2022 Honda multipurpose vehicle was heading north when his vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a southbound 2025 Mazda multipurpose vehicle.

The driver of the Mazda, a 72-year-old man, and one of the passengers, a 69-year-old woman, were treated at Wilcox Medical Center and later released. A second 69-year-old female passenger was transported to Straub Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment. All three occupants of the Mazda are from Washington State.
Police said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, and toxicology results are pending.
