MAKIKI, HI – An accident in Makakilo claimed the life of a man riding a skateboard, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
The crash occurred Friday morning shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Makakilo Drive and Palailai Street. Police said the 38-year-old skateboarder was going south on Makakilo Drive when he struck the vehicle of a driver who had stopped in the southbound lanes of Makakilo Drive before Palailai Street.
The skateboarder lost control, traveled into the intersection, and was struck by another vehicle whose driver was turning left from Makakilo Drive onto Palailai Street with the right of way. The skateboarder was ejected onto the roadway and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, police said.
The two drivers involved, a 65-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were not injured and remained at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
