NORTH KONA, HI – A car accident in North Kona early Sunday morning left a teenage driver critically injured, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
The Hawaii Police Department said a 16-year-old girl was driving a 2023 Toyota Camry south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway when the wreck took place at about 5:07 a.m. Responding officers learned that the vehicle veered off the roadway near Kiholo Bay Road, hit several large rocks and overturned multiple times.
The teen, a Kailua-Kona resident, was transported to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable. The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. No one else was in the vehicle.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit.
