HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said a woman is facing charges in connection with a fatal pedestrian accident that took place in Hilo on April 13.
In a news release, police stated the driver of a 2006 Honda SUV traveling east on East Kawili Street at about 8:18 p.m. struck a pedestrian near Manono Street and left the scene, continuing toward Kanoelehua Avenue. The pedestrian, 57-year-old Eric Mabuni of Hilo, was pronounced dead at Queens Medical Center.
After the collision the driver turned right onto Kanoelehua and struck a pedestrian crossing signal before heading south, according to police. A short time later the Honda was located at the intersection of Kanoelehua Avenue and Kawailani Street.
The Honda driver, identified by police as 25-year-old Sienna Tavares-Brown, of Pahoa, was not injured. She was initially arrested for first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. She has also been charged with multiple other offenses, including leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
Two juvenile passengers in the Honda who were related to Tavares-Brown were not injured and were released to family members.
