KUNIA, HI – A Honolulu police officer was hospitalized after being struck by an alleged drunk driver in Kunia on Thursday night, according to KITV.
The officer was on a solo bike on the H1 Freeway heading westbound when the incident occurred at about 11 p.m. Police said he stopped at the Kunia Road on-ramp and turned on the bike’s blue lights to keep vehicles from entering the freeway. At that point, the officer was hit by a motorist who had attempted to drive around him.
The officer, a 38-year-old man, was knocked to the ground and transported to an area hospital. He was initially listed in serious condition before being upgraded to good condition. The officer was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Ciara Minami, was arrested after showing signs of impairment. She was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and was released on bail.
Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, but do not think speed was involved.
