NORTH KONA, HI – The man killed in a collision last Friday in North Kona has been identified, the Hawaii Police Department said.
The victim of the crash was 19-year-old Noah Edward Zandstra from Kailua-Kona.
The incident took place on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19) at the 84-mile marker. Investigators said Zandstra was driving a 2024 Kawasaki Ninja sport bike southbound at about 6:42 p.m.. The rider was overtaking multiple vehicles simultaneously when the bike collided head-on with a 2021 Honda CR-V.
Zandstra was pronounced dead after being taken to Kona Community Hospital. The Honda driver, a 65-year-old Kamuela woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the North Hawai’i Community Hospital.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash, and SAID speed was a contributing factor. Police said it was the 28th traffic fatality this year compared to 15 at this time last year.
