KA’U, HI – The Hawaii Police Department released new details regarding a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred last Thursday.
Police said the victim of the crash in Ka’u has been positively identified as 59-year-old Andre Joseph Fournier Sr. of Ocean View.
The incident happened at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Leilani Street, where officers responded at about 5:37 p.m. An investigation indicated that Fournier was driving a 2022 Kawasaki KLX300 motorcycle south and overtook several vehicles near the Manuka State Park entrance.
After passing the vehicles, the motorcycle was seen crossing over the double solid yellow lines and then hit a rock embankment on the mauka side of the highway.
Fournier was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash, the 18th traffic fatality this year compared to 8 at this time last year.
