HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police have released additional details regarding a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred early Saturday morning in Hilo.

Police identified the man killed in the incident as 45-year-old Michael Wilson of Mountain View.

Hilo patrol officers responded to the scene at 12:36 a.m. and determined that Wilson was operating a 1990 Yamaha motorcycle southbound on Kilauea Avenue just before the Puainako Street intersection. Wilson crossed over the center line and crashed head-on into a utility pole.  He was taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate the collision, and believes that speed and inattention were the main contributing factors.
