NORTH KONA, HI – Police have identified the victim of a motor vehicle accident in North Kona last month as a 65-year-old man, according to Big Island Now.
The driver who died was Kevin Patrick McHugh of Kailua-Kona, authorities said. The incident occurred March 7 in the area of Hinalani Street and Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway sometime before 10:19 p.m.
According to investigators, McHugh was driving a 2021 Kia Forte west on Hinalani Street near the merge lane for the highway when the vehicle struck a utility pole.
McHugh was released from the scene after he showed no sign of injuries, but he was found unresponsive the next day. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital, and an autopsy has determined that it was the car crash that caused his death.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident was asked to contact the police Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit.
