KEA’AU, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said they have identified the man who died after being struck in a hit-and-run collision in Keaʻau on the night of May 15.
The victim was 66-year-old Daniel Marcos of Kea‘au, police said in a news release.
The collision occurred on Highway 130 near the intersection of Orchidland Drive at about 10:50 p.m.
Police responded to a report of a person lying in the roadway and found Marcos, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police determined that he was struck multiple times by unknown vehicles, with the vehicles fleeing the area in an unknown direction.
Investigators believe the pedestrian may have been attempting to cross Highway 130 and was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Failure to render aid when a person is injured or killed in a traffic collision is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000 under Hawaii law, police said.
The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit has begun a negligent homicide investigation and asks anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Hawai‘i Island police.
