PAHOA, HI – A motorcyclist killed in a crash with a dump truck last week has now been identified, Hawaii Island Police said.
The victim of the Feb. 3 collision was reported to be 36-year-old Wallace Zimmerman of Pāhoa.
An investigation by Hawaii Island police found that Zimmerman was riding south on Keaau-Pahoa Road after 3 p.m. and began passing multiple vehicles on the mauka shoulder. The motorcycle collided with a 2020 Peterbilt dump truck whose driver was turning right into a driveway.
Zimmerman was pronounced dead at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The dump truck driver, a 67-year-old man from Hilo, was not injured.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol and/or drugs were possible contributing factors in the incident
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation.
