Police identify man fatally struck by hit-and-run driver in Kahului

KAHULUI, HI – New details have been released regarding a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in Kahului early Monday morning.

According to KITV, the man killed in the crash has been identified by authorities as 57-year-old Jesus Mettao.  Investigators said he was lying in the roadway on Lono Avenue near Ka’ahumanu  Avenue at about 3:10 a.m. when he was run over by a car.  Mettao was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved kept on going without stopping to help, and is now being sought by Maui Police.

Lono Avenue was shut down between Ka’ahumanu Avenue and Vevau Avenue for the accident investigation.

Anyone with further information on the hit-and-run was asked to contact Maui Crime Stoppers.
