Pickup driver dies after crashing into canal off Haleakala Highway

MAUI COUNTY, HI – Maui police said an accident involving a pickup truck left a driver dead early Friday morning.

Hawaii News Now reported details of the wreck that occurred in the eastbound lane of Haleakala Highway near Keahua Road shortly before 4 a.m.

Police said a man driving a pickup drifted off the roadway and the vehicle plunged into a canal.  The driver, a 31-year-old Makawao man, was pronounced dead after being taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.  He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the wreck.
