KANEOHE, HI- The Honolulu Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a pedestrian in the Kaneohe area early Sunday morning.

A police news release stated that the collision took place at about 1:20 a.m. on Kahekili Highway near Haiku Road.

Investigators learned that a 33-year-old man was walking north on Kahekili Highway when he was struck by an unknown motorist who also was going northbound. The driver fled the scene without stopping to help or provide information.

The pedestrian was lying in the roadway when a driver pulled over on Kahekii Highway to assist.  Another driver tried to avoid a collision with the stopped vehicle and was struck from behind by another vehicle, which then ended up hitting the pedestrian.   The pedestrian died at the scene.

One passenger in one of the vehicles was taken to the hospital in serious condition.   No other injuries were reported.

It is not yet known whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision, the 24th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 10 at the same in 2024.
