HONOKAA, HI – A man walking on a highway in in Honoka‘a was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sunday night, according to Big Island Now.
The incident occurred along Highway 19. Hawaii Island police were dispatched to the area shortly after 7:30 p.m. after a report of a person wearing dark-colored clothing walking near mile marker 47.
As officers responded, they saw a southbound vehicle swerve into their lane, then observed a man with dark clothing lying on the road. He was not in a marked crosswalk.
Despite attempted life-saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m.
The vehicle involved in the collision was a 2018 Toyota 4Runner multi-purpose vehicle. The driver, a 53-year-old Honoka’a woman, was not injured.
Investigators do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the fatal crash.
