PAHOA, HI- A pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a pickup truck in Pahoa early Monday morning,
Hawai‘i Island police said.
Officers responded to Ainaola Boulevard near Palm Way after the incident took place at about 5:43 a.m. They learned that a female pedestrian had been hit by a 2022 Hyundai pickup truck going westbound. The victim was initially reported to be crossing the road but was not in a marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian was unresponsive at the scene, and was taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition. The Hyundai driver, a 36-year-old Pahoa man, was not injured.
The initial investigation indicated that neither speed nor impairment were believed to be contributing factors in the collision. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit.
