HILO, HI – A pedestrian accident in Hilo last week left a man critically injured, reports the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
Police were called to the scene of the incident June 18 at about 10:10 a.m. An initial investigation found that a 60-year-old man from Ocean View walked into eastbound traffic in the vicinity of Kinoole Street and Ponahawai Street. The pedestrian, who was not in a marked crosswalk, was struck by a 2001 Ford E-250 van headed south on Kinoole Street.
The man was taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center with what were reported to be life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition. The van driver, a 39-year-old Hilo man, was not injured.
Investigators do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation.
