HONOLULU, HI – Honolulu police were dispatched to a pedestrian collision in Haleiwa on Saturday afternoon that left a man critically injured, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
Investigators said a driver was heading west on Kamehameha Highway at about 1:30 p.m. when he crossed into the eastbound lane and onto the eastbound shoulder. The vehicle struck a traffic sign and then hit a pedestrian standing on the shoulder next to an unoccupied vehicle.
The crash caused the pedestrian, a 20-year-old man, to be pinned in between the two vehicles. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The male driver and his female passenger, both 18, were not injured and stayed at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation by the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division’s Vehicular Homicide Section. So far it does not appear that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors, according to police.
