LĪHU‘E – A pedestrian was critically injured in a collision on Kūhiō Highway Friday night, according to the Kauai Police Department.
Officers responded to the crash site near the Laukona Street intersection after the incident took place at 10:45 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a 58-year-old Hanamāʻulu man was walking westbound along the eastbound shoulder of Kūhiō Highway when he tried to cross the roadway and was struck by a 2008 Toyota van driven by a 77-year-old Kapaʻa man.
The pedestrian was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical but stable condition and was later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.
Investigators said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash. Toxicology results were pending.
Kūhiō Highway was closed for about two and a half hours during the investigation. Traffic was diverted through nearby residential streets during the closure.
