HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a collision in Hilo Monday afternoon that left a pedestrian critically injured.
Police released details of the incident that occurred shortly after 2 p.m. the intersection of Ponahawai Street and Kapiolani Street.
An investigation found that the driver of a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck was traveling west (mauka) on Ponahawai Street and making a left turn onto Kapiolani Street when the vehicle struck an 83-year-old man who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian, a visitor from Minnesota, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in Oahu and listed in critical condition.
The pickup driver, a 30-year-old man from Hilo, was not injured. Police do not believe speed or impairment were contributing factors in the crash.
A negligent injury investigation is being conducted by the East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit.
