PAHOA, HI – Police are investigating a pedestrian accident in Pāhoa last week that left a park security guard hospitalized.
According to Big Island Now, the victim was a 61-year-old guard at Pohoiki (Isaac Hale) Beach Park. Investigators said he was struck by a vehicle in the vicinity of the park entrance on April 4 at about 7 p.m. Puna police and Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and took the man to the Hilo Medical Center. He was later transported to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu and was listed in critical condition.
A witness told detectives that a red pickup truck was seen leaving the area without its headlights on following the crash. Police believe it was that pickup that hit the security guard as well as a parked vehicle in the area.
Anyone with further information about the incident was asked to contact the Police Department’s Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit.
