NORTH KONA, HI – A two-vehicle collision in North Kona on Sunday afternoon left one of the drivers critically injured, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19) at the intersection of Kiholo Bay, near the 82.5-mile marker.
An initial investigation determined that a 19-year-old Pahoa man was driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup and making a left turn onto Queen Kaahumanu Highway. The Dodge was broadsided by a southbound 2006 Ford F-250 pickup driven by a 21-year-old Kamuela man.
The Dodge driver was listed in critical condition after being taken to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. An 18-year-old woman in his vehicle was evaluated and released from North Hawaii Community Hospital. The Ford driver and his 19-year-old female passenger were not injured.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident.
