HAWAII ISLAND, HI – Hawaii Island police are reporting a significant increase in the number of traffic fatalities so far this year, according to a Spectrum News report.
Data released by the Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Services Section showed that 17 people have been killed in 15 car crashes to this point in 2024. That is compared to eight people who had died in seven crashes at this time a year ago.
The police department added that there have been 366 major crashes in 2024, an increase from 326 last year.
Police are trying to keep the roadways safer through the use of DUI roadblocks and patrols throughout the island, and have arrested 347 people this year for driving under the influence.
22 drivers were arrested during the week of May 6 to 12 and four were involved in accidents, police said.
