HONOLULU, HI – Police announced that a suspect has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Honolulu, reports Hawaii News Now.

It happened Wednesday morning in the area of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kamakee Street near McKinley High School.  Two students were struck by a pickup truck while walking across the street towards the school at about 6:45 a.m.  The driver left the scene without stopping to help, according to police.

One of the victims, a 16-year-old girl, died of her injuries.  The other was listed in good condition.

Police said the suspected driver has now turned himself in.  45-year-old Mitchel Yoshige Miyashiro was arrested on multiple charges, including first-degree negligent homicide.

Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
