HONOLULU, HI – A car and a scooter were involved in a fatal collision in Kalihi Tuesday afternoon, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The vehicles collided in the vicinity of Kalihi Street and Palanehe Place.  According to police, a scooter rider was going at high speed southbound on Kalihi Street shortly after 4 p.m. when he broadsided a northbound vehicle making a turn into a residential driveway.

The scooter rider, a 31-year-old man, was thrown onto the roadway and was later pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.  Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time the crash occurred.

Investigators said speed was a contributing factor in the wreck.  No other injuries were reported.
