PAHOA, HI – Police said one person was killed and another was injured when their pickup truck crashed Sunday night in Pahoa.
Hawaii News Now reports the accident occurred on Highway 137 near the 13 mile marker at about 7:40 p.m. According to Hawaii Island police, a man driving a Nissan Frontier pickup veered onto the right shoulder of the roadway and hit an embankment. The vehicle went airborne before colliding with a tree.
The 41-year-old driver was pronounced dead after being rushed to Hilo Medical Center. A 44-year-old Pahoa woman riding in the truck with him was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.
Police investigating the wreck believe that speed and inattention may have been contributing factors.
