HONOLULU, HI -The Honolulu Police Department released details of an accident that left one of its veteran police officers critically injured.
According to Hawaii News Now, the victim was identified as 46-year-old Felix Gasman, who has spent 15 years with the department.
The incident happened shortly before midnight Sunday while Officer Gasman was conducting traffic control on the H-3 Freeway. Investigators said a driver swerved to avoid a vehicle stopped in the roadway, and one of the vehicles ended up hitting the officer. He was pinned between two vehicles and suffered extensive injuries.
Officer Gasman was taken to the hospital in critical condition but his condition was upgraded Tuesday to serious. The driver was not injured and stayed at the scene.
Police are reviewing body camera video of the incident as part of their investigation. It is not believed that speed, drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.
The H-3 Freeway was closed in both directions while the scene was being cleared and investigated.
