HILO, HI – A pedestrian died after being struck by a pickup truck in Hilo last week, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Investigators said the victim was crossing Ohuohu Street between Makaala Street and Puainako Street when the accident occurred Thursday afternoon shortly before 4:30 p.m.
The pedestrian was struck by a 2018 Dodge pickup truck going south on Ohuohu Street. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the Hilo Medical Center. The man was identified as 66-year-old Wayne Metz of Mountain View. The pickup truck driver, a 70-year-old Hilo man, was not injured.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and began a negligent homicide investigation. Investigators said Metz was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash and said they do not believe speed was a contributing factor.
