KAUAI, HI – The Kauai Police Department released details of a fatal collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV that occurred on Friday afternoon.
Investigators determined that the driver of a 2010 Toyota SUV was making a left turn onto Kaumuali‘i Highway from ʻŌma‘o Road at about 4:45 p.m. when the vehicle was struck by a 2015 Honda motorcycle traveling eastbound on the highway.
The motorcyclist, a 69-year-old man from Puhi, was pronounced dead after being taken to Wilcox Medical Center. No injuries were reported for the driver of the Toyota, a 64-year-old woman from ʻŌma‘o.
Kaumuali‘i Highway was closed in both directions for about two and a half hours for the accident investigation.
Police said speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the wreck. Toxicology results are pending to find out whether impairment was also a factor.
