HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a collision in Hilo on Sunday night that left a motorcyclist dead.
In a news release, police said officers responded to the crash at the intersection of Ainaola Drive and Komohana Street at 9:25 p.m.
An initial investigation indicated that the operator of a 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling southwest on Ainaola Drive when the bike collided with a 2015 Nissan sedan going northeast on Ainaola Drive and negotiating a left turn onto Komohana Street.
The man on the motorcycle was pronounced dead after being taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. His identity has not yet been released. One passenger in the Nissan, a 23-year-old Hilo woman, was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries and released. The Nissan driver, a 37-year-old Hilo man, and a juvenile passenger in the back seat were not injured.
Police have launched a negligent homicide investigation and believe speed was a contributing factor in the wreck.
