NANAKULI, HI – An accident in Nanakuli on Thursday afternoon left a motorcycle rider critically injured, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The motorcycle collided with a vehicle in the area of Farrington Highway and Lualualei Naval Road at about 2 p.m. Honolulu police said a driver going east on Farrington Highway was trying to make a left turn at the intersection when her vehicle was broadsided by the motorcycle going in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed.
The motorcyclist, a 45-year-old man, was ejected onto the roadway and was rushed to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 70s, was not injured and stayed at the scene.
An investigation is continuing into the incident, which shut down lanes in both directions on Farrington Highway for several hours.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor, but that drugs and alcohol were not involved.
