HONOLULU, HI – A motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon following a collision with a vehicle in the Kalihi area, according to Hawaii News Now.

The rider, a 20-year-old man, broadsided a vehicle at the intersection of North King Street and Kokea Street.  The Honolulu Police Department said the crash happened at about 3 p.m., after the motorcyclist disregarded the red traffic light while heading east on North King Street at a high rate of speed.

The motorcycle rider, who was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.  The driver of the vehicle, a 58-year-old man, and his passenger, an 86-year-old woman, were not injured and stayed at the scene.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.  Police said it appears that speed was contributing factor.
