KALIHI, HI – Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services crews responded to a fatal motorcycle collision in Kalihi early Thursday morning.
According to a Honolulu Police Department news release, the incident occurred on the westbound H-1 Freeway near the Middle Street overpass at about 1:45 a.m.
The police department’s Traffic Division learned that a motorcyclist was heading west at a high rate of speed when he lost control and crashed into the guardrail. The rider, a 22-year-old man, was ejected onto the roadway.
He was taken by EMS to an area hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. Police said the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision, but it has yet to be determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
This was the 51st traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 26 at this time last year.
