WAIPAHU, HI – A motorcyclist was critically injured in a collision in Waipahu on Saturday night, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The department’s Traffic Division determined that a motorist was driving westbound on Malakeke Street at about 7:15 p.m. and traveled into the eastbound lane to try and overtake another vehicle. The motorist collided with an electric motorcycle being driven by a 19-year-old man.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected onto the roadway and was transported by EMS to an area hospital in critical condition.
The driver, a 44-year-old man, and his juvenile passenger were not injured in the crash and stayed at the scene.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
