MAKIKI, HI – A moped rider was hospitalized after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in the Makiki area on Wednesday night, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The collision occurred on Piikoi Street near the intersection of Lunalilo Street at about 8:25 p.m. Accident investigators learned that a motorist was heading north on Piikoi Street in lane 1 when the vehicle entered lane 2 and hit the moped rider.
The driver kept going north on Piikoi Street without stopping to help or provide information, police said.
The 41-year-old moped rider was ejected onto the roadway and was taken to an area hospital in good condition. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Investigators do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident, but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
