Moped rider seriously injured in Honolulu hit-and-run collision

HONOLULU, HI – A hit-and-run collision in Honolulu early Sunday morning left a moped rider hospitalized, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The incident occurred near the intersection of South King Street and McCully Street shortly after 3:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation determined that the moped rider was heading east on South King Street when he was reportedly broadsided by a motorist trying to turn left from South King Street onto McCully Street.

The rider, a 27-year-old man, was ejected onto the roadway. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

The unidentified driver involved kept going north on McCully Street after the collision without stopping to help or provide information.

Investigators have yet to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.
