WAILUKU, HI – A driver was arrested following an accident in Wailuku late Friday night that sent a moped rider to the hospital, reports Hawaii News Now.
The moped collided with a car in the area of Waiehu Beach Road and Eha Street at about 11 p.m., according to Maui police.
Investigators determined that the driver of a Honda sedan was making a left turn from Waiehu Beach Road onto Eha Street when he crashed head-on into an eastbound YN-50. The rider of the moped, a 53-year-old Waiehu man, was ejected and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with what were described as critical, life-threatening injuries.
Police said the driver of the sedan, a 19-year-old Lahaina male, stopped after the crash and helped provide first aid to the victim.
That driver, a 19-year-old man from Lahaina, was then arrested on multiple charges, including negligent injury in the first degree, operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, and consuming or possessing intoxicating liquor while operating a vehicle.
