WAIANAE, HI – A moped rider was critically injured in a collision on Farrington Highway in the Waianae area on Sunday night, police said.
The Honolulu Police Department released details of the crash that occurred in the area of Leihoku Street at about 7:53 p.m.
The initial investigation indicated that a motorist was stopped in the eastbound turn lane of Farrington Highway at the intersection when the westbound traffic stopped to allow her to make a left turn.
As the driver turned onto Leihoku Street, an unidentified male moped operator going west on Farrington at a high rate of speed traveled in between and past the westbound traffic stopped at the intersection of Leihoku Street and collided with the turning motorist.
The moped rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The drive of the vehicle, a 47-year-old woman, and her 49-year-old male passenger, were not injured and stayed at the scene.
Police said speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the accident.
