MAKIKI, HI – An elderly moped rider was killed in a collision with a vehicle in the Makiki area, according to Hawaii News Now.
The accident took place July 10 in the area of S. King Street and Piikoi Street. An investigation determined that a 78-year-old man was riding a moped east on King Street shortly before 10 a.m. When he tried to change lanes, he collided with a car driven by a 47-year-old man and was ejected onto the roadway.
The moped rider was critically injured and died from his injuries last week at an area hospital. He was not wearing a helmet when the incident occurred, officials said. The driver was not injured.
Investigators do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs contributed to the crash.
